are described as “Star crossed lovers”. Innocent in their ways, and according to the prologue, nothing could stop their untimely deaths. Their love is said to be “overthrowed”, the whole conflict between the families and their love for each other gets way out of hand.
The two households in the play are Montague and Capulet, though the Capulets play a rather more significant part in the course of the play. (Romeo; Montague) (Juliet: Capulet)
This conflict between the two dominant households had been going on for years
“From ancient grudge break new mutiny”
Where death shows the seriousness of the grudge.
“Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean”
This rivalry dominates the city, every time any members of the opposing families meet, there is likely to be a brawl of some sort. This is outlined when Romeo turns up at the Capulet party:
“A Montague; our foe, a villain that is hither come in spite”
Tybalt says this when he spots Romeo at the party. He despises the fact that Romeo has the nerve to turn up at a Capulet house gathering. This shows that there is quite a bit of ignorance this rivalry.
The prince warns the two families they come to brawl again; their lives shall pay the penalty.
“If you ever disturb our streets again, lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace”
(This is the first sign of Irony)
It is ironic because eventually Romeo and Juliet’s lives pay the penalty, before this arrogant brawl can be put to an end.
Romeo behaves in a ‘lovestruck’ way at the start of the play. He mopes around because he thinks he is in love with Rosalyn (Unrequited love), and she does not love him back, locking himself in his room, depressed. He says love is only bringing him pain by using oxymoron.
“O brawling love, loving hate, anything of nothing first create, o heavy lightness, serious vanity”
