Coping with a Illness of Obesity


Living in the United States has increased the risks for any individual of being overweight. “ Obesity is a chronic illness that can be defined as an increase in body weight beyond the limitation of skeletal and physical requirement, as the result of an excessive accumulation of fat in the body” (Rolfes,Whitney,2002).
There are more than 80% of individuals in the United States who are obese. The numbers are increasing each day because more and more people are not educated on this topic. Parents need to be educated on the risks of obesity because children are highly susceptible to adult onset diabetes. The society we live in needs to be educated on this topic because we tend to accept eating in larger quantities, double sizing from fast food chains and eating whatever we want. In reality we just need to take the time and go back to the food pyramid we were once taught. This paper will highlight the important factors of being obese and what is involved from how we cope with this disease.
Obesity can be treated with medications, surgery, supplements, fasting and education. Obesity can be treated if you are willing to be treated. Living with emotional and psychosocial aspects will be the most difficult when dealing with obesity, because it is what you want to do about this situation. Costs played a factor in my treatment because it can be very expensive and if you don’t have the finances the quality of treatment may not be available for you. I have spent an enormous amount of money on over the counter diet pills, supplements and prescription medications. The only problem with this is none of them work for me. I now ask myself were they really safe for me to take. Another part I found to be a burden is knowing I spent all that money on something and did not get any results.
