Schizophrenia: A Dangerous Mind
Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that severely impacts how two and a half million Americans think, feel, and act. It is a disorder that makes it difficult for a person to differentiate between reality and imagined experiences, to think logically, to express normal emotional responses or to behave normally in social situations. It is one of the most serious and complex disorders of the mind, which can affect people of all races, age and economic standings. Schizophrenic patients have a severe withdrawal from reality as they cannot distinguish between reality and fantasy. This forces the persons to require medical attention relentlessly as they cannot face the daily tasks of their lives. The term schizophrenia literally means split mind, and many people still believe incorrect definition that the condition causes a split personality (which is an uncommon problem involving dissociation). Schizophrenics also suffer from inappropriate moods, hallucinations and delusions, which make them highly unpredictable (sometimes even dangerous) and difficult to care for or treat effectively. Schizophrenia can be draining on both the people suffering from the disorder and their families. People with schizophrenia often have difficulty functioning in society, at work and in school. Family members may have to help out financially and make sure that medication is taken as prescribed.
There are four types of Schizophrenia that have been recognized to this day. The first of which is Disorganized, next Catatonic Schizophrenia, Paranoid, and Undifferentiated schizophrenia.
Disorganized schizophrenia is characterized by a disorganized behavior and incompetent speech. It has a flat or inappropriate affect on patients. Patients may laugh at funerals and cry on happy and humorous moments. Their responses and emotions to the world around them are not right. These people cannot behave well socially.
