Why I'm A Liberal

The way one person perceives something is completely different from someone else. Yet everyday people make their minds up about political issues, which places them on the political spectrum, without them even knowing it. There are so many different factors that determine one’s political or social orientation. Religion, one’s upbringing, education, and one’s surroundings are by far the most influential factors that influences one’s decisions. It’s crucial to understand that so many people coexist with completely different mindsets, and thus completely different opinions on certain matters. Being raised in both a conservative and liberal environment, I believe it had strong influences on me. I was born in Western Canada, and was raised there until about the fourth grade. The conservative and liberal parties were very close to one another on the spectrum in Canada, and the only great difference was that the liberals believed in more government intervention. The way I saw things work, and my own opinions on how social issues should be handled, led me to conclude that I’m a liberal.
I believe in the goodness of man, and that the government can set him on the right path in times of need. Locke’s philosophy mirrors most of my sentiments. As I’ve lived the first fifteen years of my life I’ve met a lot of people, some kind, some greedy and some unfriendly. I’ve met so many people with unique personalities it’s astonishing. Even as early as the third grade I could start distinguishing who was who. I recognized all the stereotypes, the smart over-achievers, the popular athletes, the dumb rejects who had trouble making friends, and also many that fit many different categories with a lot of different variations. Despite how different from the conventional behavior of society the people were, I always dug through and saw the good in the person.
