hics, due to the website they now have. This only came about in the last couple of years. So, again, I can see how these external issues are making an impact on advertising. This chapter basically was an introduction chapter, and it went into just the definition of advertising and the four roles that it plays such as: a marketing role, a communication role, an economic role, and a societal role.
Chapter 2 went into the role that advertising plays in society. It also discussed the regulations that are placed on advertisers and ethical issues that may arise. The suggested class project for this chapter had me select three print ads that addressed ethical issues that were found in the chapter, and I had to interview several people to find out their opinion of each ad. I chose ads that promoted cigarettes, Vagisil, and Dingo jeans. After asking these people what they thought of each ad, it made me realize how crucial it is to appeal to your target market without crossing over boundaries. Companies really do have to watch how they advertise to customers. They have really cracked down on cigarette ads due to the fact that their harmful nature and them being promoted towards kids. Advertisements have to be done in a tasteful manner, such as the Vagisil ad that was mentioned. This is not an issue that most people want to discuss because there is not a whole lot of pleasantness to it. This ad certainly would not be placed in a magazine targeted towards males, so making sure your ad is placed in the right media towards the right target market is definitely a key issue. The Dingo jeans ad addressed the subliminal message issue. Some may have interpreted O.J. Simpon’s “third leg” to by symbolic of something sexual, so it is important that these symbolic messages do not cross over the line; however, distinguishing what that line is may become a little tricky.
