Employees feel like they serve a sense of purpose. Herb Kelleher, Southwest’s legendary CEO, consistently puts his employees first. Southwest Airlines recently topped a recent Fortune magazine listing of “The 100 Best Companies to Work for in America,” “Working hear is truly an unbelievable experience. They treat you with respect, pay you well, and empower you. They use your ideas to solve problems. They encourage you to be yourself. I love going to work!” Southwest provides employee awards that reflect their hard work and continued excellence to the company. One award is called the “Winning Spirit” in which employees nominated by their peers and/or managers are recognized for performance “above and beyond the call of duty,” and other awards such as; “Heroes of the Heart” award. This award goes to the employee who’s behind the scenes work, which usually goes unnoticed by customers and employees is rewarded for excellence. The recipient of this award has an airplane designated in their honor, which flies with their name painted on it for one year. Rolling out the red carpet for employees happens to be the trademark for Southwest airlines, which has demonstrated that employee satisfaction does result in continued success. The proof is that the company’s revenues are growing 15% annually and its hiring more than 200 new employees a month.


American airlines compared with Southwest airlines does not quite match respectively in regard to employee satisfaction, but they are trying. American Airlines in Fort Worth, Texas, will spend $15 million a year for the next three years to offer it’s 100,000 employees subsidized PCs and Internet service for home use. “We want to...
