Truly and honestly in both these movies I don’t think you can find a better Billy Ocean. The charisma, intelligence, and charm of both George Clooney and Frank Sinatra both fit well into Billy Oceans character. It was almost as if they could be themselves on screen. One other comparisson that stuck out in my mind was Basher(2001) and Sammy Davis Jr. Quite a good idea on Soderbergh’s part to pull someone off that had a slight resemblance to Davis Jr.
In order for people of our generation to enjoy a movie like the 1960 version of Oceans 11 it would more than likely have to be re-made. I don’t know why, but to me Sinatra’s version was more difficult to understand/follow. Maybe because I myself am not to familiar with the actors of that time and they all look alike to me? When you remake a movie as good as O11 was back in the day, if you can keep the remarkable famous people, odd are you can make just as much if not more on the film. The older version is outdated not only in language, but also in music. O11(2001) has more of a 21st century theme, whereas O11(1960) has music by Sinatra, Davis Jr., and Martin. Not taking away anything from them, but you use our generations music on our generation and it tends to appeal more to them. You have to be slightly intelligent of the times of the first make.
