The first couple of times out at the Physical Education fields I found myself working with certain children more than others. It seemed like I would the students who were more sports oriented more than the students who were not very athletic. In the leader – member exchange theory Covey talks about how leaders when working with other members in groups develop in – groups and out – groups (Covey 18). This was exactly what I was doing with my students. The students who I was paying more attention to became my in – group and were very talkative and open with me during conversation. The students in which I was paying less attention to became the outcasts or the out – group. Theses students were less talkative and very shy when I tried to engage in a conversation with them. I was starting to feel like my presence was one – sided and my presence was only helping those in the in – group. I then decided to start paying equal attention to all the students in each class. In fact, at these students age, all of them need to be given a substantial amount of attention in order for you to have an impact on there learning. Covey states on page 18 that “developing in – groups and out – groups are inevitable, but leaders should strive to be as equitable as possible.”
Trying to balance my time between every student turned out to be more difficult than I thought. I was in an ethical blind because I asked myself if it was fair to the kids that needed my help to take their time and give some of it to kids that maybe were not in need of my help. I decided to continue to help the students that really needed me and then tried to help the other kids in different ways like explaining to them how important it was to use their knowledge to help their classmates.
