Cottage was hosting a casino that night, and having memorized all the blackjack odds to memory the night before instead of studying for his thermodynamics exam, John was ready to gamble. David and John met while playing at the same table, in which John, playing by odds, wins the last hand of the night on double blackjack.

After this, their friendship starts almost immediately. John reminisces as being able to know that they would become friends right as he sat down at the table and played his first hand. The next morning, they already start on a project together, writing a play for the Triangle Club, which is a comedy club on campus. Although the musical titled “A Cracker as big as the Ritz” consumes many days and nights of their time, it is a failure and is never put on by the club. It is completely off-the-wall in nature. During their preparations of the script, Meadows drops out of school, and David moves into the dorm.
