John had 3 roommates that year, Frank Kunst, Jed “Whit” Whitmore III, and Scott Meadows, all juniors like himself. Kunst could be described as a jock, and has a very superficial relationship with competitive implications throughout the year. He always introduces him self by including his graduating year of 77’ at the end of his name. During their first meeting, Kunst is arguing excitedly with a bunch of seniors trying to sell them the map on the wall. Whit is also a sports player, but more of the quiet type. He plays hockey, and was first introduced while shooting a puck into the fireplace. Meadows leaves before the semester is over. He is described as a pot smoker, and mostly too stoned to care. Instead of offering his hand to John, he offers him a joint.

During the first week, John ‘Bickers” at the local eating clubs. Bickering is similar to rushing; yet they don’t do any stupid stunts or drink excessively. To join one must ‘win’ a bid of entrance. He gets a bid at Ivy, an elegant, upscale but homely club. These clubs provide meals, friends, and slight entertainment, such as pool tables, TV, or a library. Many also have private rooms for studying or meetings.

Also during bicker, John signs up for, pledges allegiance to, and swears his loyalty to a number of clubs and organizations, also noting that he never went to anything, except one. Marching Band. He admits he never knew how to play an instrument, and still doesn’t, but the pledge's convinced him he could play something. John skipped all rehearsals, and only went to a few games, before screwing up a drill so noticeably, the band leader cursing and fuming officially fires him as the cow bell player for the Princeton Scatter Marching Band.
