Killing Babies began as most short stories do, introducing its main character, “Rick”.
Now Rick sounded like the average down on his luck type of guy, with not much information on his earlier years, his character opens up in court. Not much was even mentioned of his looks, there is more insight given into his personality and shaky mentality. The story seems to center around him for the obvious reasons that he is; in my opinion… Different, maybe troubled, or even as some might say it a little unstable.
“When I got out of rehab for the second time, there were some legal complications… There was a problem with some checks I’d been writing for a little while there…” (194)
Often through out the story, the mood of Rick seemed to change from positive about his new change of direction in life, and the move downward to more paranoid, as if another side of him was beginning to show.
“I’d just drifted into a thick sludge of hopelessness after I dropped out of school for a band I put my whole being into that disintegrated within a year.” (199)
And to clear up the point I was trying to state, he does lose his self control, and shoots up the people in front of the clinic where his brother is a physician. Besides the fact that Rick turns out to be an odd ball, his brother started out the same way. Other than Phillip being a doctor there doesn’t seem to be much evidence that he was going to turn out much different.
“… His 38 year old-face as trenched with an anal-retentive misery…” (194)
With him being the older of the two, he becomes sort of a shoulder to lean on in this complicated situation that Rick is faced with. Phillip lives the average lifestyle, but nice, in Detroit, Michigan; in a typical house with a wife and two children.
