The scene starts off in Meg and Edwin’s flat. Meg is explaining to Edwin (who is also reading Meg’s interview the paper) how her Dad would react to the English critics scathing remarks about Meg’s book. Meg than starts hinting about how Edwin should meet her Dad. Edwin brushes her off until she goes into a sook. Edwin then promises that he will, in fact get to meet her Dad. After a pause, Edwin asks Meg if she really told the interviewer that she couldn’t return to Australia to live because she is married to a ‘Englishman who is terrified of flying, cannot swim to save his life, and has a morbid fear of mosquitoes and sunburn’. Meg then confirms this statement as true.

The scene in question, particularly Meg’s first bit, is an obvious indicator of Meg’s homesickness and desire to return to her family. By listening to the choice of words Edwin uses, he is not particularly interested in meeting her Dad. His disinterest leaves Meg in a minor sulk as described when it is said she begins to look sullen. Edwin then half heartedly assures her he will get to meet Wal (her father) and goes on reading the newspaper. The last part in which Meg is quoted to describe Edwin unfavourably to the interviewer is a humorous jab at Edwin.
