According to Donna Matheson and Yun Wang of the American Journal of Clinical Health, most of a “daily energy intake is consumed during television viewing” (Matheson 1088). Another study included in the American Journal of Clinical Health showed that children tend to eat more unhealthy foods while watching television. A study performed by the Kaiser Family Foundation showed that “people who watch a lot of TV are more likely to be fat than people who don’t” (Sullum 12). A person uses little energy when they just sit and watch television. The metabolic rate of a person watching television is lower than when a person is resting. When the metabolic rate is lowered, you burn fewer calories, thus gaining more weight. Another problem is that people tend to eat and drink unhealthy snacks, such as soda, potato chips, and candy, while watching television. A new type of dinner, known as the T.V. dinner, was created so that people can make quick meals and eat them while watching television at the same time.
