During the roaring 1920’s one man captured the hearts and eyes of a nation. He belted homers, advertised products, was good with kids, and lived the lifestyle of a truly over indulgent man. This man was George Herman Ruth. He is otherwise known as “The Babe”, “ The Colossus of Clout”, “The Sultan of Swat”, and “The Great Bambino”.
George Herman Ruth was born on February 6, 1895 in his grandfathers house in Baltimore, MD. Young George spent much of his childhood skipping school and getting into trouble. At this time , every city had institutions set up for young delinquents whose families couldn’t control them. In 1902, George’s mother sent him to one such institution, St. Mary’s. George would live there for the next 12 years. While at St. Mary’s, George received guidance from Brother Matthias. Brother Matthias was a huge man, he stood 6’6” tall and weighed nearly 250 lbs. George was a kid with a lot of energy. He played a lot of practical jokes and acted out. Brother Matthias focused George’s energy into baseball. From the very beginning, George could throw harder and hit farther than many of the bigger , older boys. Georges talents continued to grow and by the age of 19, George was considering a professional contract with the Baltimore Orioles. In that time at 19 you were still considered a minor, so Brother Matthias had to sign all of Georges papers. George’s first professional contract paid him $600 for the season. Even with fame, George would never forget the St. Mary’s school and often came back and played ball games with the boys.
From 1914 on, George would be known as Babe Ruth. This game was given to him during spring training in march of 1914. He received it due to the protection from razzing and practical jokes he received from owner Jack Dunn. He was known as one of Dunn’s babes, and the name Babe stuck with him.
