It can be argued that globalization is just a more complex and rational method of imperialism that has the benefit of portraying a more humane method of exploitation. It seems that imperialism has evolved into what is now considered globalization through the same players learning from their past mistakes. Domination still exists, however, through methods of economic dominance rather than military dominance. In fact military dominance is no longer accepted unless properly justified. Most of the time this justification proves to have a second more important agenda, however, it is rarely necessary due to the vast economic dominance already held over Third World countries by core countries and their international corporations. Recently, the only times that military intervention has proved prominent is in cases where there is much political resistance conflicting with international corporate interests such as dictatorships in Cuba, Mexico, and most visible in the situation of Iraq.
Before analyzing the methods of today’s global strategies it is important to identify the relationship of past imperialism with current globalization. The age of colonialism was inspired by world powers’ need to expand their influence and promote their economic interests. It was obvious that the world was full of wealth that was being neglected by the foreign public in periphery areas of the world. Their inability to identify and extract these resources provided an opportunity for foreign powers to take the initiative. The vast military and economic power of core countries allowed them to exploit these areas with ease.
