It was now possible to obtain an abortion for reasons such as serious mental or physical handicap of the fetus, or if the pregnancy was a result of rape or incest. Following the 1973 decision of Roe vs. Wade, abortion was decriminalized on the basis of a woman’s constitutional right to privacy. States were now prevented from restricting access to abortions. However, this decision came with the provision that states did not have to finance abortions which were not medically necessary or theraputic in nature (Deflem, 789). Thus came about the current state of abortion laws.
Reasons Why Women Have Abortions:
Women decide to have abortions for a multitude of reasons.
