Borderline Personality Disorder “Two persons in one body—one day laughing, so gay that any stranger seeing her at home will sing her praises: ‘Never a woman so sweet in all the world so loveable, let a day pass and she is insufferable to come near or to look at….” Borderline personality disorder: a clinical guide, Gunderson, John. Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a disease that I unfortunately have along with 2% of the general population. There are nine qualifications that must be present in a patient to be diagnosed with BPD: Anger that is inappropriate intense or uncontrollable Self-destructive acts such as self-mutilation or suicidal gestures Two self-damaging impulsive behaviors, persistent identity disturbance Splitting (someone is either a saint of evil) there is no gray area Chronic feelings of emptiness and boredom Frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment Stress related paranoia (non-delusional) Also many people with BPD have an unusually high sensitivity to interpersonal relationships such as insight and empathy Two most commonly held characteristics that are seen a lot in patients but not focused on as necessity are that, most patients who are diagnosed were abused as children and women are diagnosed more than men. Extreme depression accompanies the disease but it is not part of the disease itself. Borderlines can also be seen as individuals who exercise repetitive self-destructive acts prompting rescue from another party. I have heard also that a borderline can talk for five hours without you getting a sense of whom they are. Those who are involved with a borderline are in for a wild ride. Many non-borderlines often feel like they are manipulated by emotional blackmail.
