The leftist response may seem compassionate because it shields people from unpleasant aspects of reality, such as social disapproval and lack of immediate funds. But it is actually indulgent because it panders to human weakness and promotes long-term social pathology. Indulgence is notorious for delivering apparent short-term gains in exchange for real long-term pain.
The apparent gains make indulgent policies and practices superficially attractive. Just as recklessness can masquerade as courage, and prodigality as generosity, so can indulgence masquerade as compassion. In the process, vices of excess can make the virtuous mean seem defective. That, no doubt, is one reason left-leaning politicians succumb to indulgence. Blinded by ideology and propaganda to its long-term consequences, they mistake indulgence for compassion and are apt to consider real compassion defective.
