The main reasons why teens use drugs according to CASA (2003) and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is to help them relieve stress, they are bored or the availability of extra money, depression and low-self esteem. Other reasons why teens use drugs is to fit in with their friend, and because they think, it is fun. Many adolescence using drugs use them as an scapegoat from there problems at home.
When a teen is contemplating in using drugs, they ask themselves three main questions “what will my friends think?” “Will it be fun?” and “Will it help me forget?” Majority of teens know that there is a risk when doing drugs, but it is more important for them to have fun than to worry about their safety.
