• There are four predictable phases of treatment which includes a pre-alcoholic phase, prodomal phase, crucial phase and the chronic phase. “Pre-alcoholic phase” is when someone starts to “drink on occasion” as a “social drink” or for “relief” and the person starts to build up a “high tolerance.”(Wrangham) The second phase is “prodomal phase” and this is when “blackouts begin; sneaking drinks; guilt develops, but is quickly dismissed; and the amount is usually still controllable.”(Wrangham) The third phase is the “crucial phase,” which is when “drinking sets up a chain reaction; explanations become necessary in why the person is drinking heavily; and life is alcohol centered. The fourth phase is the “chronic phase,” which means “alcohol tolerance decreases; there is a cycle of binging and detoxing and then repeating the same cycle; and suicide attempts.”(Wrangham)
• Heavy alcohol drinking is a nutrient depletory like no other drug we know of:
For example, in “2-4 weeks nutrients that are depleted are folate, magnesium, potassium, and zinc. In 4-12 weeks niacin, and nioctinemide are depleted and in 6 months or more
there is a loss of bone strength and the pancreatitis can start to show.”(Wrangham)
• Chronic liver problems can develop from alcoholism. These include “hepatitis, fatty liver, ascites, cirrhosis, cancer, bleeding, ulcers, lowered blood sugar, and portal hypertension.”(Wrangham)
• The central nervous system effects depends on dosages of drinks. For example, .02 BAC is equal to one drink and relaxes someone. .05 BAC is equal to 2.5 drinks and impairs judgment. .20 BAC is equal to 10 drinks and causes no judgment and enables one to be drunk for 6 hours. .65 is equal to a coma o...
