Most of the time I have put these thoughts behind me until recently. Last year I started a new friendship with a female of African American decent. It was ok for her to belittle me and tell me why I had done things, such as, buying a house in a neighborhood in which a heavy majority of African American families resided. Yet whenever I would try to explain my motives, she would immediately distort my explanation in a way to fit her perception of my judgment. This would only infuriate me further and convinced me that all African American women behaved in such an obtuse manner. It has only come to light recently that the reason for her behavior was due not to her heritage, but to due to her condition of depression. An old saying is, “ Even negative attention is better than no attention ”. This all matriculated when at work I was receiving praise for dedication and perseverance of my job, even though I was currently going through an Annulment. I now wish I would have seen this earlier. I now am trying to ease the tension between the two of us by keeping our conversations strictly professional. I however continue to let her talk to me about her problems. The only thing I typically complain about is school.
