Issue Paper One: Should we legalize drugs?
It seems as if the cry of “legalize drugs!” is being heard everywhere in the United States in this day and age. Some people argue that legalizing drugs is the only way to “win” the drug war. I agree that dug enforcement does place a burden on us in the economic resources. Which makes them out of control.
I think it becomes apparent that legalizing drugs won’t solve any of our Nations drug problems. I have found that the main argument is that individuals have the right to do as they see fit, as long as they don’t harm anyone else. If they choose to put drugs inside their body, and they have the right to make that choice, without the government interference. I truly think that there is presently too much government, and our present government limits individual’s rights too much with many inappropriate laws and regulations. People think that somehow the government will step aside and not be involved in the drug issue if they were legal but that is truly a fantasy world. The government is all over the tobacco and alcohol industry so; do we really think they won’t be involved in drug regulation? Let’s talk about the crime issue in the legalization of drugs. Crime I don’t think will be reduced by drug legalization. The correlation between drug crime; and violent crimes such as homicides, assaults and domestic violence. Drugs cause violent behavior! The reason most crimes are committed was because they were ON drugs in the first place. Legal or Not? I don’t think they were necessarily committing a crime to get illicit drugs, but the drugs themselves cause the violent behavior. Would this be happening if they were not on Drugs? I think crime will rise when drugs are legal do to more people will be taking drugs. Crime is high in high-drug use areas not because of people committing a crime to get drugs, but the influence of the drugs made them more incline...
