This is why we shouldn’t allow smoking to continue in enclosed public places. If someone wants to smoke, there should be outside seating areas for their use. However, the smoking and nonsmoking sections should still be an option. The reason for this is because someone who just came from outside smoking would still have the scent of it on them, and that bothers some people, especially if they are getting ready to eat. These areas should also be an appropriate distance from all doors leading into buildings so that no smoke can reach the inside of the facility.
As of March 2003, New York City has been under a law that banned all indoor smoking in public places. Before the ban came, all people talked about were how businesses would lose money. Now that the law is in place, you don’t find many people complaining about it anymore. However, now nonsmokers are complaining about the results of the ban. Barbara Evans, a local resident, said, “to get around town, she had two strategies: choose less crowned streets to avoid clumps of smokers, or ‘hold my breath, exhale right before I get to them and barrel through as quickly as I can’”. Basically the problem is that there aren’t many places for people to smoke so they all are usually close together outside on the streets. NYC residents say the problem gets worse when night comes around. As more people go to the clubs at night, this means that more people are going to be outside smoking. Some people have described the sidewalks as “obstacle courses”. Also, along with all the smoke, the people tend to be very loud and could be disturbing others at rest (Critics 1).
