Macbeth slowly relies on the witches’ prophecy’s more.
Macbeth comes to the realization that for him to in fact become King, he will have to defeat recently named heir to the throne, Malcolm, King Duncan’s son, and also prevent Banquo’s son from gaining access to the throne. Macbeth returns home after being pronounced Thane of Cawdor, where he and his wife must play host to the King. Lady Macbeth begins to contemplate what “impedes thee from the golden round” (Act 1.5, 28). She desperately wants her Macbeth to be King and she calls upon the “aids of spirits” (Act 1.5), to help her in her quest to the throne. Lady Macbeth has a very different reaction to Macbeth’s. Lady Macbeth suffers none of her husband’s uncertainty. She seems almost more bloodthirsty as we already know she is very persistent on Macbeth fulfilling the witches’ first prophecy.
Lady Macbeth requests that the, “spirits that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here/and fill me from the crown to the toe top-full/of direst cruelty…” (Act 1.5, 40-43). The supernatural world will aid her in the hardening of her heart and make it possible for her to carry out her spiteful plan. Lady Macbeth wishes to throw out her goodness for the sake of gaining the title of Queen. With the help of the invisible spirits, she wants to make herself able to commit a heinous act of murder to make her dreams of the royal life come true, without having doubts or remorse.
