Photosynthesis Review
General Botany is the study of plants in our environment. We are required to use a textbook named, Biology of Plants, by Raven, Evert and Eichhorn. This is the sixth edition of the textbook which was copyrighted most recently in 1999. The proposed textbook for next year’s use is titled, Introduction to Botany, by Murray W. Nabors. It boasts a 2004 copyright. Upon comparing the photosynthesis chapters of the two sources, I noticed a number of differences between the two. More importantly, the Introduction to Botany was overall a more enjoyable read.
The material in Introduction to Botany was easier to read, more relevant and it seemed to get to the point rather than just to fill the page with words. The overview, for example, is short yet it accomplishes the point as the long, wordy overview in the Biology of Plants. Nabor writes in the overview of Introduction to Botany, “Photosynthesis makes the basic organic molecules a plant needs to survive, prosper and reproduce. Now compared to the overview of Biology of Plants, “During photosynthesis, plants, algae and photosynthetic bacteria are able to “harness the sun,” using the radiant energy to convert simple molecules- carbon dioxide and water- into complex organic molecules that can be used by plants and animals alike as sources of energy and molecular building blocks.” To me Biology of Plants is hard to read compared to Introduction to Plants.
One of the key features that makes the Introduction to Botany a better read is the section review at the end of each section. Also, the diagrams are much more informative and easier to understand than in Biology of Plants....
