There are a wide variety of different causes of depression. Such causes stem from chemical, genetic and environmental or emotional. From the chemical perspective, research has shown that an imbalance of certain neurotransmitters, such as serotonin a chemical in the brain which is believed to be linked to depression (WebMD). Genetically speaking, it is believed that depression, especially bipolar disorder is inherited, suggesting that a biological vulnerability is evident. Yet again, not everyone is diagnosed due to the same factors. Last but not least, a change in environmental or emotional factors throughout ones daily life can also have an underlying and significant affect on ones mood day to day. Some studies have shown that depression and anxiety go hand in hand. Could it be that anxiety is a predisposition of depression?
One would think that an illness like depression would affect all humans the same. That is not the case with genders. Men and woman range greatly when experiencing, expressing and understanding this disorder. It is believed like in bipolar disorder, women are more likely to be affected by the depression and men are most likely to be affected by the mania. Studies have shown that woman throughout the world are two-folds as likely of experiencing depression than men are.
Some 7 million woman in the United States have clinical depression, according to the National Mental Health Association, and some researchers estimate that only one out of every three women with depression is properly diagnosed. (Shaw)
