What is Sickle Cell Anemia?

Sickle Cell Anemia is an inherited
blood disease. It cause’s amounts
of pain, severe damage to vital organs,
and for some patients, death even comes
into terms in early child hood or adulthood.
Most people with Sickle Cell Anemia enjoy
a good healthy life.



What are the cause’s of Sickle Cell Anemia?

The cause of Sickle Cell Anemia
is the misshapen form of blood cells.
Because of the blood cells being misshapen,
it is difficult for the cells to flow through
the blood vessels, which makes it almost
impossible for the joints and fingers
to move without pain, or becoming sore.
Regular size’s of blood cells are round,
Sickle Cell Anemia blood cells have a variety
of different shapes, such as: moon-crescent,
sickle-shaped, or spiked shaped.




Can you have Sickle Cell Anemia?

Sickle Cell Anemia is not in question
for everyone. You can only inherit if you
are an African American, or have African
American ancestry, or if you are Hispanic’s of the
Caribbean ancestry. About only one in every
400 to 600 blacks and one in every 1,000 to 1,500
Hispanics inherit the sickle cell disease.
Sickle Cell Anemia also affects the people of, Arabian,
Greek, Maltese, Sicilian, Sardinian, Turkish,
and southern Asian ancestry.












Can you catch Sickle Cell Anemia?

You can not catch Sickle Cell Anemia from
someone. It is not contagious. The only way
to inherit the disease is genetically. To get the
disease genetically, one of the children must have
two sickle cell genes. One from each parent.





Are there any other forms of Sickle
Cell Anemia?

Some people have a combination of one
Sickle cell gene, plus any one of several others
abnormal genes that can affect red blood cells.
These combinations can cause anemia and sickling,
But in general they are less troublesome than sickle
cell anemia.
