Actually, the mistreatment of animals is not the norm, but the exception. In the rare cases where actual abuse does occur, the proper authorities are notified and corrective actions are taken. In fact, the United States Federal law has strengthened laws and guidelines pertaining to the proper care and treatment of all laboratory animals. Harsh financial penalties apply for uncorrected violations of the federal laws and regulations (Partners…10-11). The bottom line is that scientists need healthy animals for their research otherwise the data obtained may be inaccurate, resulting in years and thousands, if not millions of dollars on wasted research.
