ries made thanks to animal research.” They fail to mention the cruel means of their “research.” In reality, the process of scientific experimentation without the use of vivisection has given us many discoveries such as the discovery of penicillin and the development of the x-ray (Allen n.p.). Many articles from doctors and researchers are full of unsupported statements such as “if it were not for vivisection, millions of babies would die annually.” Such claims can be disproved by anyone who checks the facts. Comparable reasoning runs as follows: “We tested Army blankets by wrapping 20 dogs in them an!
d then throwing them into the refrigerator to see if they would freeze. Therefore, if it were not for animal experimentation, all of our boys in the Army would have frozen to death.” Statements such as these are an insult to any intelligent person. Also, without the use of vivisection, scientists have learned more about the transmissions and mechanisms of the HIV virus, and they have also learned that heart disease is the leading cause of death in America (Allen n.p.).
Vivisection has been used for many years on many different species of non-human animals. It is an unnecessary practice that can not take the place of actual human or human model experimentation. Some human-based research models include epidemiological studies (comparative studies of large human populations), in vitro research (cell and tissue studies), and clinical research (studies of human patients) (Stevens n.p.). Since animals differ from humans physically and psychologically, the data collected from experiments on them is often misleading and harmful when applied to humans. Karen Stevens, founder of the organization of All for Animals stated that:
All animal species are unique, including humans, and unnatural animal experimentation cannot reveal the secrets of human diseases nor the necessary requirement...
