Anton Szander LaVey (1875-1947), a protruding ceremonial magician, was a man who actually started teaching these beliefs as a religion, and in a constructive way. As the creator of The Church of Satan, LaVey was raised off of Judeo-Christian principles. Judeo-Christian principles are essentially the belief in good versus evil, and a belief in some "higher calling" or belief in something "more important than self". In 1947, LaVey created a minor religion called Thelema, which is similar to Satanism, or a branch of it. Often being called the “Wickedest Man in the World”, LaVey even created a term: Magick, simply meaning black magic (Terry). LaVey is credited to be the one who kicked Satanism to its feet, but later on a man named Aleister Crowley came into the picture, according to . Crowley also used black magic, but in a more evil status. His preaching’s and beliefs were mostly based on human and animal sacrifice, violence playing a large part in his life and writings.
