The rise of fundamentalism is a great force on the public attitude toward homosexuals. Evangelicals preach long and hard against any sort of accommodation to the "homosexual agenda". In fact, many preach for outright hostility toward gays. Groups like the Moral Majority build large political machines by creating fear of a gay threat.
The word homosexual did not appear in any Bible in any language until 1946. Homosexuality exists, to those who interpret it as being there, in a few passages of the bible.
The first chapters of Genesis give us the story of creation. God created Adam and Eve who became the mother and father of all people. Many people who follow the teachings of Christianity believe that this shows intent on the part of God that only a relationship between a man and a woman is acceptable. The Christian tradition teaches that God made one man and one woman leaving each of them no other choice for companionship or love. Only men and women can produce children. Some believe that his means God only wanted people with a heterosexual orientation to reproduce. In terms of the beginning, non-heterosexuals did not exist. This is one reason why churches oppose gay relationships especially in terms of marriage. Currently only the Unitarian Universalist Association, the United Church of Christ, and just recently the Jewish Reform movement (Lattin, 2000); will perform marriage ceremonies for gays.
In Genesis 19:1-25 we find the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. People of all religions use this story to speak against homosexuality. In this story, God informs Abraham that he is going to destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.
