Her arms are extended in front of her giving the impression that she is reaching to pick up the baby. In the lower middle portion of the painting, there is a donkey and an ass. The animals present at Christ’s birth in the Bible, are shown as well. The back door to the barn is open, allowing the viewer to look out into the distance; this feature gives the picture depth. In the middle ground of the picture, there seems to be ruins of a city. The ruins are thought to be the ruins of the Temple of Solomon, an ancestor of Joseph. Looking pass the ruins, is the second scene. The scene, set on a hill, shows Gabriel, the angel, announcing the birth of Christ to four shepherds.
