As a result of this, Jordan and Ware (1997), describe how mourners, “may feel isolated and misunderstood in their grief when most of their social network quickly begins to convey the message that it is time to end the mourning and resume not only to their regular functioning, but their ‘regular self’.”(p.362). Many of these melancholic emotions can become too overwhelming and may lead to depression.
Parental loss is a leading cause of depression. Zisook (1982), reports that emotional reactions to the death of a parent usually continue one to five years after the loss. In a study done by Scharlach and Fredriksen (1993), 45 percent of the participants reported a general decline in physical illness, fatigue, and overall health. The adult may stop eating or may even partake in compulsive eating to try and ease their pain and sorrow. The loss or increase in appetite can create numerous health problems for a middle aged adult, such as problems of the heart and lack of nutrients. A depressed person may also have difficulty sleeping or may develop insomnia. This might be because of reoccurring dreams of the deceased parent. Alcoholism generally is linked to depression. An adult experiencing the grief of a parent’s death may turn to alcohol. Lack of motivation and exercise are also results of depression, which can lead to health problems.
