e a third type of aggression is pointed out, described as “intrinsic pleasure in fighting.” This is more often seen in children who engage in play fighting than anywhere else, but it is also seen in adults, especially in men. For example, men who pick up fights with random individuals in a bar for no apparent reason, except to achieve overpowering the victim to prove his dominance. One could argue that this “intrinsic pleasure in fighting” is a more immature form of aggression. (Arnold Buss, P 51-54).
The ‘instinct theory’ is a Freudian idea, which was paralleled and expanded upon by Konrad Lorenz, as they both believed that aggression was an energy that sprung of from natural human instinct, as well as in animals. Similar to other emotions, if an individual does not exert aggression in one form or another, it accumulates and then is ready to be triggered by an event that will cause the individual to exert it at a higher degree then he/she normally would.
