What Causes a Fear?
Fear is to be afraid or scared of something that could happen but won’t stop you from doing what you should do. A fear could be caused by many different ways. Most of the time fear is caused by a bad childhood experience that is suppressed into the unconscious mind. A common fear is the fear of driving over bridges. Many people are afraid of driving over bridges but it will not stop them from doing so. That is the difference of having a fear or a phobia. A fear will not stop you from doing what you need to do, but a phobia will stop you. There are many different ways of interpreting how this fear started. Using the biological, psychoanalytic, and behavioral perspectives, we will understand how this fear was caused.
The fear of driving over bridges could be explained through the biological perspective. The biological perspective explains how our body’s internal systems affect our thoughts. This perspective deals mainly with the brain and its functions. The cerebral cortex is a part of the brain that stores all the images we experience (58). By driving over a bridge, that memory will be stored in the cerebral cortex for later remembrance. The thalamus will relay these past occurrences and send them to various parts of the brain (66). The limbic system involves the basic emotions of a person (68). When the memory is remembered, the limbic system would activate and the emotion of fear or concern would be expressed when driving over bridges. Neurons are in charge of transmitting electrical or chemical information through the body and the dendrites receive this information (71). These memories are sent throughout the brain and received by the dendrites. The sight of bridges could trigger the brain to respond to fear since the event of falling over a bridge traumatized the person. The biological perspective controls all of the memories and the response to all of these memories.
