an grow, self-confidence. I usually play it safe when it comes to my abilities. I have all the confidence in the world when it comes to things that I know well. However, in areas if the unknown, the fear of personal failure always looms over my head. I need to work on this aspect. Sometimes the fear of failure does not allow me the ability to try something new. Therefore bringing self-confidence down. For example, the time when I was 10 years old and I nearly passed on an opportunity to take a penalty shot in overtime. It was the semi-finals in soccer. I was afraid that I could miss and we would lose the game. After a quick pep talk from the coach, I took the penalty shot and scored. We still lost the game, but I will never forget how that doubt entered my mind.
Self-knowledge is important for anyone’s leadership development. When you pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses, you are able to identify key areas that you excel in and/or need growth in. Only when you are able to overcome weaknesses that stops you from becoming an effective leader, you are able to become one. Such a process is key to developing leadership skills, as illustrated in the following reference in the text:
