thinking alone won’t keep everyone on the track to changing his or her lives. Self-talk is also part of positive thinking. In order to help our positive thinking stay positive we have to work on our self-talk. In our text book, on page eighty, the authors define self-talk as the non-verbal, mental speech we use when we thing about something, solve problems, and make plans. When you start thinking positive, your self-talk seems to follow in the same pathway.
Unfortunately there can be some problems with positive thinking. Sometimes we
receive our positive thinking externally through motivation. This external motivation is
usually temporary. The most common example is that of motivational speakers who frequently present their ideas at college campuses and workplaces. In Shad Helmstetter’s book What to Say When You Talk to Your Self, Helmstetter explains that external
motivation comes from the outside. It can demonstrate how to change your life, but it cannot actually change it for you. It is only temporary. I have learned that you have to stop listening to others and become your own motivator so the ideas can stay locked
inside of you and help you follow through with the changes. This internal motivation is
also considered self-talk.
I have experienced this external motivation firsthand and will be the first to stand up and agree that it does not work and is only temporary. I worked as a consultant for the candle company PartyLite. We essentially ran our own portion of the business. It was all about sales and I quickly realized that I did not have what it took to sell useless items to people and then take their money. But PartyLite thrived on motivational speaking. At each meeting someone who had been successful at building their business would share their experience. They would demonstrate how they worked their way up the chain and earned a large income.
