The following is a sample of violent rap lyrics that may be available to any teenager in any of the CD shops around neighborhoods today: "I am a big man (yes I am) and I have a big gun; got me a --------- and I like to have fun; held against your forehead. I'll make ---------, just for the ---------… I'm every inch a man, and I'll show somehow; me and my ------ gun; nothing can stop me now; shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot…" (Nine Inch Nails released "Big Man with a Gun"). Despite its entertainment value, gangsta’ rap misleads our impressionable teens by showing them that violence, and aggressiveness is acceptable behavior; and unless government officials decide to make a change, gangsta’ rap will continue to influence the behavior of adolescents for the worst.
In the 1970's the young residents of the Bronx in New York introduced us to a new style of music called rhythm and poetry, or better known as Rap. Within a couple years, rap music became tremendously popular among teens and spread throughout the whole United States. At that time, rap was just another kind of dancing music that made people vibrate in clubs and at parties. Nowadays, the rhymes that gave rap music its uniqueness has become one of the most accessible sources of violence for youth. Rap music has been taken over by what is known as gangsta’ rap, which is a type of music based on rap but with lyrics that talk about racism, violence, sex, and governmental criticisms. Due to a lack of government regulations, gangsta’ rap has taken over the minds and attitudes of our youth, showing them that violence, and aggressiveness is the acceptable behavior today. The violence of gangsta’ rap influences the behavior of adolescents and will continue to do so unless government officials decide to make a change.
