Freedom or Gun Control, The Choice is Ours
It is an admitted fact that the nation has a problem with crime. The question that must be answered is, whether or not guns have caused our nation’s crime problem. In the past few years certain organizations have been trying to influence the ideas of gun control. Just because a person owns a gun does not mean that the person poses a threat on anyone’s life. Guns have been a part of our lives for a long time, and there should be no reason to take them away now. Guns have played a major role in our lives throughout history, and while they have been used for both good and bad, it is our duty to decipher with cold hard facts and sound reasoning which side of the gun control debate makes the stronger case.
Gun control is the restriction of the use of firearms. With gun control, guns would no longer be available to the public. Gun control advocates claim that the restriction of the availability of guns would greatly reduce violent crime; however, with gun control the law-abiding public would not be able to offer any protection for themselves and would have to depend upon the government for safety (NRA-ILA 7).
The anti-gun control group has always looked to the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution as a basis of its belief in the public’s right to keep and bear arms. The Second Amendment states that “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed” (Qtd. in GunCite 3). The question of the meaning of the word Militia has been debated with much concern. The militia clause of The Constitution was meant to guarantee the right of the people against fear of government infringement. The Second Amendment guaranteed the right to bear arms and it still stands today (GunCite 3).
