International News: Israel/Palestine
The question of news coverage of the ongoing Palestinian uprising will be analyzed within the scope of two print sources. Table B illustrates the two consecutive dates chosen at random, the pertinent individual articles contained within each source on those dates, and an identifying code for each article. For the purposes of simplification, each article will be referred to by code throughout the analysis (full citations appear in the list of references).
On the first chosen date of coverage, The New York Times contained three articles relevant to the ongoing violence in Israel. NYT-1 was framed from a typical pro-Western, Eurocentric point of view. This would not be worthy of note, as the source is an American newspaper, except for the fact that this is a powerfully important international story of a conflict between traditional Western and non-Western values. Though the intent of the article is to be an episodic event (Bennett 2003), one side of the conflict is mentioned in human terms, and the other is barely mentioned at all.
