Internal dissent among anti-war activists grew out of a difference in culture amongst its members. The SDS, which many believe to have pioneered the movement, felt that its later member, who many labeled as hippies, undermined their earlier efforts. Both had similar goals of bringing an end to the Vietnam War, but the hippies seemed to put off the clean-cut image of the SDS and inevitably lessen the respect given to the movement. (DeBenedetti)
There is no concrete evidence that this split in lifestyle amongst protestors had any effect on the over-all movement. The goals of the anti-war movement were eventually achieved when Nixon finally pulled American troops out of Vietnam. However one can only wonder weather the introduction of the movement’s less appealing hippie members directly resulted in the government’s uncooperative behavior.
