Capital punishment is needed in today’s vigilant society. In today’s world, crime is an everyday thing, and is nothing new, and is far from getting old. The best way to deal with murderers and sexual offenders is to execute them. By punishment of execution, we are preventing future crime, as it acts as a deterrent for other criminals and prevents criminal (who are going to be released) from becoming repeat offenders.(charts can be found athttp://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/cp.htm) As the above charts show, whenever there are more executions and more prisoners on death row, violent crime is lowered. For example, look at the violent crime rate for 1993-1998. As you can notice, it is a steady decrease, and if you look at the charts for executions and prisoners on death row, there are obvious peaks. Therefore, whenever more criminals are executed, or are sentenced to capital punishment, crime decreases.
The best way to deal with violent criminals is to execute them. The Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that in 1999, the nation spent $146,556,000,000 on the Federal, State and Local justice systems. In that year, the United States had 1,875,199 adult jail and prison inmates. Based on this information the cost per inmate year was:
-- Corrections spending alone: $26,134 per inmate
-- Corrections, judicial and legal costs: $43,297 per inmate
-- Corrections, judicial, legal and police costs: $78,154 per inmate
That $78,154, could have been spent on beneficial services that the government provides funding for, such as cancer research or welfare. And let us not forget who funds the government themselves, we, as taxpayers, paid to keep these murderers and violent offenders alive....
