For example, Martha Stewart was sent to prison because she had insider trading information. Now we all know that she was wealthy and despite that fact she was tried, prosecuted, and convicted. We elect the government, and because of this, all people have a say in the laws, indirectly or not. “A Gallup poll taken in September, 1994 reported that 80% of the respondents favored the death penalty.”(Cooper)
The people of America need the death penalty. We are not a nation of idiots! We know the difference between what is right and wrong. Applying the death penalty is right and killing is wrong; it is not just one person deciding on the issue; it is the majority of America.
Another reason that capital punishment is just, is that the death penalty only applies to someone who is considered a “responsible agency”. A society has to consider what a “responsible agency” is. (Sorell 27-35) A responsible agency is a person who thinks about a crime before and after he or she commits it. An example of someone who is not a responsible agency, would be a person on a mind altering drug; someone who is temporarily insane or mentally challenged; a young child; or a person who is threatened by loss of life or limb. It would not be right to punish any person for a crime if he or she did not know what they were doing at the time.
Also, a responsible agency can only receive the death penalty “if they commit an act deserving of death”. (Sorell 27-35) An act deserving of death is: “murder, an airline hijacking resulting in death, treason, and genocide.” (Worsnop) Our society has the correct definition of a responsible agency.
