These views are given above because of its relevance to Parmenides theories and therefore the assumption on which Zeno has based his arguments. Without a proper understanding of these concepts Zeno’s arguments appear ridiculous because it is inconsistent with reality, but what is reality?
Dichotomy
Zeno’s first paradox of motion famously known as “Dichotomy” begins on the premise that motion is possible (believed by his opponent). This paradox deals with a single body travelling a finite distance in a finite time. A familiar version of this paradox is that a runner is the single body and that the distance is a100 metres. These figures are used because they are vivid and easy to work with but here it is not the mathematics that is important rather it is the concept. Zeno then goes on to state that space is continuous and therefore before the runner (i.e.: single body) can cover the whole 100metre racecourse (i.e.: finite distance) he/she has to cover half the distance (i.e. :50 metres in this ca...
