He said that a brilliant civilization once existed there but they became greedy and corrupt and so the gods punished them by sinking the continent into the ocean (World Book Encyclopedia). Plato might have just said that because of a religious idea or tradition passed down to him or he could have actually seen the gods meet and decide to sink the continent, you never know.
Many intelligent scholars do believe that Atlantis didn’t exist. Here is one of them. There is no sunken landmass in the Atlantic; The Atlantic Ocean must have existed in its present form for at least a million years. In fact it is a geophysical impossibility for an Atlantis of Plato’s dimensions to have existed in the Atlantic (Galanopoulos qtd. in Stein 53). If Plato is so smart then why did he not know this? Or it could be that Galanopoulos doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
