He suffers many ironies, and he is put through the judgment of his own curse which he did not cause upon himself. He did nothing to deserve such a thing, but he did deal with it and he did face the truth and consequences of his actions. “Then once more I must bring what is dark to light”, Oedipus speaks, referring to the mystery of who killed King Laúos and referring to solving it by himself. This means many things. It’s a sign of what type of irony he has to deal with, since the answer to this mystery of who killed the king, is simple, and is always in front of him for him to solve. Oedipus never does though, because he doesn’t want to accept the truth, and others must make him realized the harsh truth. He doesn’t bring the dark to light, although he knows the answer, he doesn’t because he fails to accept the right answer. It is a sort of dramatic irony that he feels responsible for the death of the King, when the reality is; he is responsible for the death of his father.
Oedipus doesn’t know he is killing his father, and he doesn’t know that he is marrying his mother so it really wasn’t something done intentionally, but people still feel disgusted by him because they feel that what he did was wrong. “Think no longer that you are in command here, but rather think how when you were, you served your own destruction”, this was said by Creon to Oedipus in order to explain how Oedipus cast his own curse upon himself, although th...
