Music: Classical To Modern

Music has been classified into large genres of music although new forms of music have sprouted up in the past 20 years. Today’s teenagers and some uneducated adults place classical and baroque into a much larger instrumental category. It is helpful for music fans to recognize the differences in origins of their music. The musical stereotypes put forth by today’s youth leaves them with very slim music choices and underexposure to the musical selections readily available.

Modern popular music is crammed into a typical front that consists of “Pop” or popular music, “R&B” Rhythm and Blues, Country, Rap, Hip-Hop, Rock, Punk, Alternative, and Nu-Metal. All these styles are played on the radio and get massive air time and record label support and are over exposed to the youth of America. There are eleven music programmed radio stations in the Dayton, Ohio area. Four of the stations play Rap, Hip-Hop, and R&B. Three stations play rock or classic rock and their sub-genres. Two stations play country music while the other 2 play classical and 80’s music.

Record Companies serve the public a big plate of music that is easy to swallow so they can make money. While the impressionable youth of America swallows it whole and washes it down with buying an album. Since the rise of the Internet other types of music has been rising through the ranks. Classical music is now accepted when put to a “Hip-Hop” beat with electronic sounds behind it. Gregorian chant is widely listened to by the enlightened person who looks for new racy styles of music. These styles have been around for thousands of years and have been paid no attention to until someone marketable pushes them.

Written music began in the church with monks using modal scales that sound out of tune to today’s musical ears. They because known as the church modes and they were used to write and perform “Gregorian Chant” which was some of the first known written music. ...
