Deming’s work with Japan after World War II played a significant role in this country’s ascent to a global leader in quality. The Deming Prize is the most prestigious quality award in the world and it is given by the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE) in recognition of Edwards Deming’s role in furthering quality knowledge and practice.

Another American, Dr. Joseph Juran, also played an important role during the 1950s in advancing Japan’s practice of quality (module4-5). Dr. Joseph M. Juran visited Japan in 1954 and, like Deming, assisted Japanese leaders in taking charge of restructuring their industries so they could export products to world markets. He was able to help the Japanese to adapt the quality concepts and tools designed primarily for the factory into a series of concepts that would become the basis for an overall “management process.”
