In the Syracuse/Clay area I would seem most logical that these four stores will remain in tight competition, with Wal-mart being Target’s closest competition, unless new chains open in the general vicinity. In other areas of the United States Target competes more closely with Kohl’s yet there has been no mention of said store chain opening in our area.
If Target changes their marketing mix, I feel that they can expect very limited reactions from their closest competitors. Target is close to their competitors, but essentially each competitor is in a league of their own as far as what customers expect from them and what they are selling. One cannot expect to walk into Target and find the same name brands and/or quality that one would find in Kauffman’s. Therefore, I feel that neither the lower end stores or higher end stores in our area would feel threatened by Target unless Target changed their prices and fell into the areas of Wal-mart or JC Penny’s. Hence, the current structure of the industry really doesn’t affect the competitive forces.
Since the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, currently the whole United States is in an economic crunch, some say recession while other’s say depression. Therefore, people seem to be more reluctant to spend money. Target Store [ ] is located in basically white, middle class suburbia with surrounding rural areas that are expanding in population everyday. It seems, according to the unemployment rate in Central New York that our area was hit pretty bad with the effects of the terrorist attacks compared to the rest of the state. While the buying power of our target market may be held back or may even have receded with jobs being lost, people are now spending money as we approach the holiday season.
