Because of the savvy, yet quality products that Huffy came up with, its no secret that they are proven when talking about the best products that the game has to offer. The reputation of Huffy Sports has driven the National Basketball Association, NCAA, and USA Basketball to make Huffy their officially licensed company.
Huffy’s Product and Problem
In September of 2002, Huffy Sports ran into a major problem with one of its portable basketball hoops. The Huffy-brand portable basketball system was developed and put out on the market in November of 2001 (CPSC, 1). The prices of these systems ranged from $100 to $200. Briefly describing, the Huffy-brand portable basketball systems come with a plastic base that can be filled with sand or water (CPSC, 1). This is to keep the portable system stabilized. The Huffy logo is advertised several times on the system, appearing on the pole, backboard, and plastic base. The hoop can be adjusted from 6-10 ft.
The problem that occurred had to do with the protruding bolt that stabilized the pole to the base. The bolt was sharp and in the way when basketball players drove to the hoop. The bolt was causing severe leg or body damages to the consumers using the basketball hoop. Eleven reports had come in to Huffy Sports involving injuries sustained by players. As a result, Huffy was forced to recall about 70,000 of the portable basketball systems (CPSC, 1).
What I Would Do
If I were a top executive for Huffy Sports, I would recall the product as soon as possible. Eleven reports is a small number and before that increases to a larger number, product recall would be the best option. Also, an extensive amount of media coverage should be requeste...
